Finally getting your book published is an exciting ‘whew’ moment after all the hard work you’ve put in so far. Now wouldn’t it be just terrific if lots of folks who read the kind of book you just wrote knew your book was out there waiting for them? Among the thousands and thousands of books already there. Hmmm… how to help them find you…

Let’s go with a trite but true direction and say going for the widest seller market you can would make sense to get access to the customers of those sellers. Do you want to knock on the doors of Barnes & Noble and your local book sellers to try to persuade them to carry your new book? For most of you, probably not. Good thing there are alternatives!

Here are 5 great resources that will help readers discover your book. We need to say right away some have an upfront fee attached to them while others are free or fees are based on a percentage of book sales – which would mean you sold some books is you paid a fee!


1.  Let’s start with Createspace.com. Createspace is an independent, print on demand publisher that will place your book for sale on Amazon.

  • You can follow a step by step process to load your book and book cover files (following Createspace directions) yourself.
  • You can do the process on your own (format, cover creation, etc.) and it is FREE or you can choose specific paid services to help you create your book. Many of our Write Riters have gone the free route successfully and at least one has used some of the paid services and spoke very highly of the experience.
  • You can choose from different book sizes, type of paper, color or black and white, soft or hard cover.
  • AND Createspace will help you turn your book into an e-book for Kindle as well!


2. Smashwords.com is next.  This very interesting option gives you access to a wide seller’s market.

  • It’s FREE to upload your book to Smashwords (follow their directions).
  • They will distribute your book for you in the correct format to B&N, Kobo and many book sellers.
  • You receive the majority of the book price, paying only a small portion to Smashwords, when a book is sold – no matter where the book was sold.
  • Smashwords has its own loyal (large) readership who will have access to your book.


3.  If you have a marketing budget, you might want to use one or more book alert services that send daily emails to all their readers. (You should have 10 4-star reviews first.)

  • Prices depend on the book genre – more popular genres cost a bit more than less popular ones.
  • They send daily emails to their subscribers, averaging about 5-25 featured books a day only in the categories the reader has specified.
  • Your book is listed for a specified number of times or for a specified period.
  • Here are 3 book alert services you can check out
    • BookBub.com – one of the largest and oldest of these services and the most expensive of these 3 – as many as 2,000,000 readers in one genre (mysteries)! You do need a budget here!
    • BookGorilla.com – newer that BookBub, smaller but very respectable readership with a 50% email open rate.
    • TheFussyLibrarian -smallest (90,000 subscribers) of the three but growing– only costs $9-$14 to list a book, but as the name implies, they have strict publishing guidelines!
  • All these services offer deals to their readership, so most books (even from very well known authors) are free to $2.99 with $.99 and $1.99 popular prices. Remember this is a book promotion or recognition effort, not a life time price!
  • All these services allow readers to specify what book genres they want to see so you have a very targeted audience!
  • All book sales are made through booksellers like Amazon, B&N, and Smashwords.


4. Speaking of targeted audiences, being part of Goodreads.com is something you really must do! This is a book readers community of about 30,000,000 people (That is the correct number of zeros!). Goodreads is not a book seller, but it has exciting tools to help authors promote their books and create their own strong reader community – think books reviews, too! It’s free to list your book here. Through Goodreads you can

  • do a pre-publication book give away (physical books only) to start a buzz about your book
  • create an engaging author’s page and even include video
  • start a blog to attract your readers
  • offer entertaining things like quizzes about your book or another topic
  • participate in discussions with readers and fellow authors
  • share what books you’ve been reading (builds  your likeability!)
  • publicize events like book signings
  • put a Goodreads author widget (they provide) on your website


5.  Last on this list of 5 is using the interesting resource of  virtual book tours. Google this term and see what you find. You have to do ‘work’ for these tours – write blog posts, for example – and there usually is a small to modest fee attached that varies depending on what services you want. The provider finds local hosts to interview you (online) and invites subscribers to the reading/interview session. These can be fun – and much less arduous than city-to-city travel these days!


You do have to work to get your book found, but these 5 tools offer excellent options with minimum time required from you. Building readership community and getting your book discovered can be an exciting journey, but, as with any journey, you have to take the first step to get started. Start your promotion journey and reap the rewards!
